Bernard
LE DREAU starts music studies in 1967. In 1979, he leaves the ENM of Brest with
his certificates.
At the same time, he plays in different dance bands of the area, and above all
discovers the Blues in 1974 thanks to Jacques LE GUELLEC, leader of “UNLIMITED
BLUES TIME”, leading group of Rhytm’n Blues in Britanny.
Since this time he never gave up with the Blues. 1980 is the year of his meeting
with Kevin WRIGHT and Olga BISTRAM, a British couple recently arrived in Brest.
He played many times with them. He also met the singer NINO FERRER, with whom he
recorded the album “CARMANTICA” (1980), and the American bluesman Screamin’Jay
Hawkins with whom he recorded “REAL LIFE” (1983) within the brass section of
U.B. TIME.
He then played with Jacky « BLET » Thomas in the group Friandise Rock (1986), a
mix of swing and Rock’n Roll of the sixties (Olympia – Fête de la musique with
Jean Louis Foulquier at the Concorde – 1984 Francofolies de la Rochelle…). At
the end of the 80’s, he went on tour with Kevin Wright et accompanied the singer
Patrick Cany. They went throughout France, from clubs to festivals, and the
blues remained…
After having recorded the first album of the guitarist Bruno Nevez, these two
guys from Brest met again on the stage of “Les Tombées de la Nuit” in Rennes,
with Peter Gritz, Jacques Pellen, Eric Barret but also Ricardo Del Fra on the
occasion of the evening performances of “Jazz à Vauban”. In 1991, Didier Squiban
called Bernard and proposed him to play as an Alto saxophonist in the band
SIRIUS. That is the way he met René Goaer, Pierrick Pedron, Boris Blanchet but
also Eric Le Lann, Tots Thielemans and the Boclé brothers.
In the 90’s, he played in the trio « The Shkers », still with his mate Kevin
Wright (guitar) and Pikey Butler (vocals and double bass). In 1995, Bernard LE
DREAU has taken part to about twenty recordings, among others those of Georges
Jouin, Sirius, Didier Squiban, Denez Abernot, Yvon Etienne, Jean Luc Roudaut,
Manu Lanhuel… During the recording of the disc « Brest 96 », he met the “trad”
musicians, such as Jean-Michel Veillon, Jean Louis Le Vallégant, Ronan Le Bars
and Gilles Le Bigot.
This last proposed to Bernard to join the group SKOLVAN : not that easy to
replace a violin by a sax in Breton music, but why not? After reflexion he did
accept, and check the result!
